Review: Cheeky Wipes

Welcome to the first review since I relaunched my blog!  I wanted to start off with something that reflects my life as it is now, I’ve had a lot of use out of and can therefore give a thoroughly tried and tested review.

I really wanted to share my experience of Cheeky Wipes – I’ve been using the wipes since my toddler was a baby and I have also bought other items from their website www.cheekywipes.com.  The website is not just for babies and has lots of products for all the family, they’ve even just launched beeswax wraps! I’ve put a little about the other products I’ve bought at the end, but this review is mainly about the wipes.

Long before I was pregnant, I saw adverts on Facebook for Cheeky Wipes. I was interested in giving them a go but kept thinking was it really worth the money and would I really use them? After getting through mountains of wipes in the first couple of months of baby being born, I spotted the advert again and thought that this was my chance to try them out, hoping to reduce the amount of rubbish going into the bin. There’s been a TV programme on what happens to wipes and how long they take to degrade – it’s really shocking and has totally changed how much I use wipes in general, for baby stuff and household cleaning.

I decided to order the all-in-one kit which contained the wipes, a clean wipes box, a dirty wipes box, a net washing bag for the dirty box and essential oils for both boxes.  There are also clean/dirty travel bags.

When ordering, you can choose different types of wipe – on the website it lists the different pros/cons of each kind of wipe so you can choose what’s best for you.  I decided to go with the trial pack which contains a selection as I couldn’t decide what it was that I needed the most.  I’m glad I did this because I use the towel ones for dirty nappies, microfibre ones for wet nappies/hands and the velour ones for baby’s face.

To get going with them, you fill the clean box with water. I recommend playing with the amount to begin with – there is a fill line but I found this was too much water, so I put in slightly less. I imagine the type of wipe affects this due to different absorbencies. You add a few drops of the essential oil (I use the lavender & chamomile, it smells lovely!) and then add the wipes. I add a few wipes at a time – I found putting them in all at once causes the water to spill over the top! Once all the wipes are in, press down and then turn them over a few times to make sure they’re all wet and ready to use.

After using these wipes, I wouldn’t go back to disposable wipes. You only need 1-2 wipes per change (I use the nappy to clean off most of the poo first) but I always needed to use loads of disposable wipes! They definitely have more grip than disposables.  I feel better that I’m putting less in the bin, both the wipes and the plastic wrapping.  My toddler has been lucky not to have nappy rash, so I wonder if the wipes have been kinder to his skin.  The box lasts me a couple of days, getting longer as the little one has gotten older.  For trips out, the travel clean/dirty bags are easy to use, haven’t leaked and lightweight.

Once you have a box of dirty wipes, they just go in the washing machine! I’m the type of person that hates hassle so it was important to me that washing them wasn’t hard work or I probably would have given up at some point.  My advice from experience is to hold the string of the dirty bag and tip the dirty water down the toilet first – it lowers the risk of you spilling any mucky water by the washing machine (clumsy me)! I put a dirty towel on the floor in front of the washing machine to catch any drips going in.  I wash along with the other towels that need washing anyway so that I’m not using the machine just for the wipes. You can either wash at 60 or at a lower temperature using laundry cleanser so it really is easy.  To dry, I try to use the outdoor line as much as possible to save electricity but in the winter, I pop them in the tumble dryer alongside the towels.

Washed and ready to use again!

It’s been well over a year that I’ve been using these wipes now and they have been totally worth the money.  I have recuperated the cost of them by buying significantly less disposable wipes and I imagine I will be using these for years on mucky faces and hands. They are still in great condition, a little faded in colour but the fabric is great. If there are any more siblings to come for my toddler one day, we’re all set!  Last year, we went on holiday to Menorca and I took a handful of wipes with me to wipe his face during mealtimes. It was so easy, I washed them in the sink afterwards and they dried in no time on the balcony. I must admit I didn’t use them on his bottom as I thought there wasn’t going to be any washing facilities but I would take them just in case next time, as there happened to be a laundrette in the resort!

Now that I have a messy eating toddler, I have a stash of the wipes in the highchair basket.  These are the perfect size for wiping down face and hands after a meal. Instead of using the clean/dirty boxes for this I just run a wipe under the tap then put it in with the rest of the washing. I use the clean/dirty boxes in a different room for nappy changes.

So… my advice is that if you’re debating whether to purchase, I really think that they’re worth it! I will use these until they fall apart, which I think will be a long time away.

Cleansing Pads

When I purchased the wipes, I added a set of cleansing pads for my face as I used a lot of disposable cotton pads.  I must say that the pads are amazing, I’ve not bought ANY disposable cleansing pads since – they are larger than normal, so you only need to use one! I wear makeup but not heavily, there is still lots of clean room on the pad at the end. Again, I take them with me for nights away/holidays and they work well.

I have also purchased reusable sanitary towels and period pants from the website – I have only used them for lighter days so far but am sure that they will be another collection that I will add to and build confidence with.
